The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (known as CIAT from its Spanish language name Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical) is a nonprofit organization that conducts advanced research in social and environmental fields to mitigate hunger and poverty and preserve natural resources in developing countries. From its headquarters near Palmira, the Center coordinates projects in Colombia, other Latin American countries, as well as many nations in Africa and Asia. Over half of its scientists are located in regional offices around the world. CIAT is one of 15 research centers that together form the Alliance of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
