I'm Tita Mekonnen. I work for Oxfam America in southern Ethiopia. The Borana people are nowadays trying to have more drought-resistant animals like goats and camels. And traditionally they have a system of restocking and people who are very poor will be restocked with a certain amount of livestock.

Goats reproduce very fast and they can really help the family get milk in a shorter time. When we distribute the person's name will be picked randomly. And five female goats and one male goat will be identified. So before distributing the goats, they are checked for their size, for their quality, for their health, and then after that they will be treated as well as vaccinated.

Beneficiaries of the restocking program are mostly women. And it is women who receive the goats. The reason we do this is in this community women are the ones who care more for the family, they are the ones who are responsible for the household, they are the ones who feed the children. And at the same time goats are empowering the role of women in the community.
