TITLE
Nairobi, Kenya
VOICEOVER
Every once in a while, someone like Pauline Ochola comes along. Five years ago, Pauline started running a clinic in one of Nairobi's poorest neighborhoods. Since then, life here hasn't been the same.
PAULINE OCHOLA
And I want to know from you, can you please tell me what really is happening in the community? In this community where we live, the population is very high. The parents can't take care of their children well.
VOICEOVER
The women who live in this Nairobi slum have an average of five children, and at least one of them won't live to age six.
PAULINE OCHOLA
I decided to promote family planning because of the need in the community. Family planning is a way of ensuring that you have given birth to the right number of children you need as a family, at the right spacing and at the right time.
VOICEOVER
And Pauline uses every waking moment and every tool she has to teach people about it.
PAULINE OCHOLA
I use the community health workers because they're the people who are living in that community; the people know them and trust them.
BEATRICE MAKADARA [Community Health Worker]
Pauline she likes being friends to everyone. When you come to her and sit with her, she will give you the answer.
ESTHER
My name is Esther [inaudible]. I'm aged 20. And this is my lovely daughter.
VOICEOVER
Pauline has been trying to get Esther to start family planning.
ESTHER
She gave me her number She told me I ought to come back for clinic for the kid. Last time we talked you told me about FP. Can you take me through the whole thing again?
PAULINE OCHOLA
I go through advantages and disadvantages, the side effects of each and every method. From there, a client decides which one to take. At the end of the day, it's not I, the health provider, but the client, him or herself, who has decided.
VOICEOVER
After six months, Pauline has another believer, but her outreach never stops.
WOMAN
There is a lot of methods of family planning.
PAULINE OCHOLA
The bible says that we should be healthy. And for us to encourage our mothers to be healthy, one way is for them to family plan. Family planning empowers the people. Because it will give a family a chance to educate their children well, to feed their children well. It really improves their general lifestyle.
ESTHER
She's an angel from above, yeah? She saved me.
VOICEOVER
Pauline has helped the number of residents seeking family planning increase by 300 percent. And she's not finished.
PAULINE OCHOLA
I feel like working, working, working with no rest. So one time, one day, I'll say that I did it.
